History

During the final stretch of the 1960’s, an aviation strip opened in the local section of Cajuiles, now part of Casa de Campo resort, for private and fumigation aircrafts with a length of 600 metres.

In the 1970’s the runway was extended to 1,800 metres, and asphalt was applied to make possible the landing and take-off of aircrafts with a larger weight, that served the first Industrial Free Trade Zone Park established in the Dominican Republic, thus connecting La Romana with other islands in the Caribbean and the United States.

International passenger, cargo and air mail traffic operations officially began the 14th of November of 1978 when local authorities officially authorize the airport as an international passengers airport and terminal, after an overlay of four inches of asphalt was applied to the runway all around its 25 meters of width, officially making LRM (IATA code) an international airport. The airport received the name of Punta Aguila International Airport.

The 1990’s is considered the decade of transformations in the airport. In 1995, the runway is extended once more, this time to 2,003 meters long and 31 meters wide, this to make it easier for commercial aircrafts with wider wingspan to land in the airport, such as the ATR and the B727 of American Eagle from San Juan, Puerto Rico and American Airlines from Miami, operating as the airlines with regular schedule service.

New La Romana International Airport
In 1998, Central Romana Corporation Ltd., began the construction of the new La Romana International Airport, Casa de Campo.

Central Romana, through its subsidiary, Airport Management Services Ltd., officially opens the airport on the 14th of December of the year 2000, at a cost of over 100 million dollars, a new, modern airport substituting the old Punta Aguila International Airport.
